With woodworking, mastery isn’t about never making mistakes — it’s about learning to disguise them with a wink and a steady hand. I like to think of it as a creative game of hide-and-seek: the pieces don’t always line up perfectly, but you learn clever ways to make the whole thing sing.
To prove I’m human, this particular board was an exercise in complexity. It was made from 80 individual pieces and, of course, there was one tiny flaw. One out of eighty. By the numbers that’s 98.75% right, which sounds impressive — and it is — but for me it wasn’t good enough. I aim for work that delights at first glance and withstands scrutiny, so I decided to sell this board at a discount.
That didn’t make it any less beautiful or any less functional. In fact, the little imperfection is part of the story: a reminder that these objects are made by hand, not by a machine. The grain still dances, the finish still feels great under your hands, and the board will still do everything you want it to do. Sometimes a tiny flaw makes a piece feel more personal, more honest — and, for someone who appreciates the craft, even more charming.
